The African film world is in mourning. Bassek Ba Kobhio, an emblematic figure of the 7th art and founder of the Écrans Noirs festival, who passed away on May 12, 2026, in Yaoundé at the age of 69, will receive a national and cultural tribute before his burial scheduled for June 27 in his native village of Nindjé.
The funeral program, released by the family and the organizing committee, includes a series of commemorative events in Yaoundé and Nindjé. From May 20 to June 21, 2026, moments of reflection, prayers, and meetings are organized every Wednesday and Saturday at the deceased's home, located in the Omnisport district, behind the tax department. An evangelical gathering is also scheduled for Tuesday, June 23.
The highlight of the tributes in Yaoundé will be the grand cultural vigil on Wednesday, June 24, at the National Museum. This event will bring together artists, directors, actors, and film enthusiasts, all coming to honor the memory of the man who did so much to promote African cinema. His Écrans Noirs festival has helped to reveal many talents and give international visibility to African productions.
On Thursday, June 25, the removal of the body will take place at the Yaoundé General Hospital, followed by a stop at the family home before a vigil at the ADNA chapel. Bassek Ba Kobhio's remains will then be transferred to Nindjé, his native village, where a vigil is planned for Friday, June 26.
