World No. 1 Jannik Sinner suffered a shocking defeat in the second round of Roland Garros on Thursday, falling to Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Cerundolo, ranked 56th in the world, mounted a spectacular comeback after losing the first two sets, ultimately winning the match in five sets with a score of 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.
Sinner, who was the favorite to win the title in the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, seemed in complete control at the start of the match. However, physical issues, including cramps, began to visibly affect him from the third set. Leading 5-1 in the third set, Sinner lost six consecutive games, allowing Cerundolo to get back into the match. Courtside microphones captured Sinner complaining of dizziness and nausea.
Cerundolo took advantage of the situation, winning 18 of the final 20 games to seal his victory. This victory arguably marks the greatest achievement of his career. Cerundolo, 24, reached a career high ranking of World No. 54 on May 18, 2026.
The high temperature, reaching 33°C, may have contributed to Sinner's physical problems. The Italian had previously experienced difficulties in the heat at the Australian Open in January. Despite using ice towels and a handheld fan, Sinner was unable to maintain his level of play.
This defeat ends Sinner's 30-match winning streak, which dated back to February. He was aiming to win his first title at Roland Garros to complete his career Grand Slam. Sinner's elimination further opens up the men's draw, with none of the remaining players having won a major title in the last two and a half years.
