The Ministry of Water and Energy (MINEE) has intensified its fight against illicit fuel trafficking in Cameroon. On the night of May 3 to 4, 2026, the National Brigade for the Fight against Petroleum Product Fraud seized nearly 10,000 liters of adulterated diesel fuel in Mbalgong, Yaounde.
According to information released by the control teams, the fraudulent cargo was found on board a truck that had been parked in the area for several days. Initial findings indicate that the vehicle was awaiting a new supply of petroleum to continue mixing operations intended to adulterate the fuel. The MINEE agents also noted the total absence of a loading slip, an essential document for tracing the origin, destination, and conformity of the transported product, highlighting a clear violation of petroleum sector regulations.
This operation is part of a broader government strategy to secure the fuel supply chain and curb the clandestine marketing of petroleum products, which poses a danger to consumers. The Cameroonian government is displaying a zero-tolerance policy in the face of this phenomenon.
The sale of adulterated fuel is a recurring problem in Cameroon, driven by price differences with neighboring countries, particularly Nigeria, where gasoline is subsidized. This illegal trade deprives the state of significant tax revenues and creates unfair competition for licensed operators. In March 2026, a similar operation in Boumnyebel resulted in the seizure of 25,000 liters of smuggled fuel.
The use of adulterated fuel can lead to significant damage to vehicle engines, increased air pollution, and economic losses for consumers. Mixing uncontrolled substances into fuel leads to the emission of dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, directly affecting air quality and having serious health effects.
In order to sustainably combat this scourge, it is essential to set up a permanent brigade with advanced technical resources and to strengthen regional cooperation to reduce price differences with neighboring countries. In the meantime, the seized products will be processed in accordance with the regulations in force.
The MINEE has pledged to intensify its efforts to ensure the quality of petroleum products and protect consumers from the dangers of illicit fuel trade. Authorities are encouraging the public to purchase fuel only from authorized stations and to report any suspicious activity.
The fight against adulterated fuel remains a priority for the government, which seeks to protect consumers, support economic integrity, and safeguard national security.
