Former French national team defender Lilian Thuram has strongly reacted to racism allegations made by Vinicius Júnior during a Champions League League match, specifically targeting comments made by José Mourinho. In an interview with L'Équipe, Thuram didn't hold back regarding the Portuguese coach's attitude, accusing him of downplaying the seriousness of the events.
Thuram expressed his disagreement with Mourinho's statements, who suggested that Vinicius Júnior might be partly responsible for the racist insults he suffered. "How can he say that?" Thuram questioned, pointing out what he perceives as a "feeling of white superiority and narcissism" in the coach's words. For Thuram, the racist act suffered by Vinicius is intrinsically linked to his skin color, not his behavior on the field.
The former international player also questioned Mourinho's logic, highlighting the absurdity of discrediting Vinicius's words and those who supported him, like Kylian Mbappé. "So that's it: Vinícius is crazy, he invented an insult and rushed to the referee? Kylian Mbappé heard it too, so Mbappé is crazy too?" he said ironically.
Thuram went on to accuse Mourinho of adopting a biased perspective as a white man, unable to fully understand the scope of the racist act. "When Mourinho tries to make us believe that Vinícius Junior is responsible for the racism he suffers, it's pathetic," he declared, calling the coach's analysis "petty" and reducing him to "a small man".
Mourinho's statements, dating from February 17, 2026, had already sparked a heated controversy. After Vinicius reported racist insults during a match against a Portuguese club, Mourinho stated that "Benfica is not a racist club," while criticizing the player's goal celebration, which he deemed provocative. He also pointed out that similar incidents occurred in every stadium where Vinicius played, insinuating a possible problematic attitude on the player's part.
These comments were widely interpreted as an attempt to minimize the racism and blame the victim, sparking outrage from many in the soccer world and beyond. Lilian Thuram's stance thus reinforces the pressure on José Mourinho, calling for awareness and a questioning of his analyses.
The initial incident occurred during a Champions League match, where Vinicius Júnior accused Gianluca Prestianni, a Benfica player, of uttering racist insults, leading to a 10-minute stoppage in play.
The controversy continues to rage, highlighting the persistence of racism in football and the need for a constant struggle to eradicate such behavior.
