The Cameroonian national football team, affectionately known as the "Indomitable Lions," carries a name that resonates with pride and determination. But what is the origin of this iconic name? Let's delve into a genesis that lies at the heart of the history and aspirations of the Cameroonian people.

The story of the name "Indomitable Lions" dates back to 1972, a pivotal year for Cameroonian football. After a painful defeat at the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) which they hosted, the Cameroonian government undertook a profound restructuring of its national team. The objective was clear: to ward off bad luck and instill a new spirit of combativeness in the players. The idea of giving a "terrifying and mobilizing" name to the team then emerged as a necessity.

A campaign was launched in May 1972 to find the ideal name. According to popular belief, the absence of a strong name was linked to the repeated failures of the national team. Among the proposals, "Scorpions of Cameroon" gathered many votes. This name was seen as original and symbolic, the scorpion being an insect that is "catchy, possessing a particularly dangerous mobile stinger". However, the name "scorpion" was quickly dismissed due to its negative connotation, associated with the pain and massacres of the Biafra war in Nigeria, where a rebel general was nicknamed "Black Scorpion".

Finally, the choice fell on "The Lions." A presidential decree of October 31, 1972, formalized the name "Indomitable Lions" to designate the national team of Cameroon. This decree marked a turning point, a true birth certificate for the Indomitable Lions.

Even though this name was favorably received, questions remained. How dare they give the name of an animal as powerful as a lion to a team with still modest results? Minister Félix Tonye Mbog, then Minister of Youth and Sports, dared to add the qualifier "Indomitable," an audacity that was either pretense or premonition. In retrospect, it can be said that it was indeed a premonition. Under his leadership, Cameroon hosted its first CAN in 1972. Félix Tonye Mbog died on July 2, 2022, in Yaoundé.

The Indomitable Lions would mark the history of African football by winning five Africa Cup of Nations (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002, 2017). They were the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1990.

The name "Indomitable Lions" is more than just a nickname. It embodies the strength, courage and determination of an entire nation. It symbolizes the spirit of combativeness and the pride of Cameroon, which resonates throughout the African continent and around the world.
